SUBJECT:
Accessory CD Changer Not Operating

MODELS:
1994 Model Year E34 (525iT, 530iT, 530i, 540i)

Complaint:
Radio does not control CD changer; CD changer is inoperative after installation.

Cause:
A number of Alpine radios with defective software were installed on E34 vehicle (except 525i). This prevents the optional accessory CD changer from operating correctly when installed.

Affected Vehicles:
There are three ranges of radio serial numbers affected:

30819651 - 30820000
F21014119 - F21014322
F30815211 - F30815552

The defective radios can also be identified while in the vehicle. The radio manufacturer and series can be displayed in the dot matrix of the radio. Turn the radio ON and depress the "PROG" and "-" buttons simultaneously. If "ALPINE 4" appears in the display, the radio is affected.

Correction:
If a CD changer in an E34 vehicle does not function after installation, verify that the radio is an "ALPINE 4" in the above production ranges. Replace the radio if affected. Note that radio replacement is necessary only if a CD changer is being installed. All other functions on an "ALPINE 4" radio operate normally.
