SUBJECT:
Identification of 1993/1994 Model Year Radios
MODELS:
All Model Year 1993 and 1994 vehicles
Situation:
With the introduction of the 1993 Model Year vehicles, BMW is installing a new range of radios with special features. The following information is provided to the technician to assist in identifying a certain type of radio, troubleshooting a problem, or answering a customer's questions.
Radio manufacturer and version can usually be identified by pressing the "-" and "PROG" buttons on the radio simultaneously. In most cases the radio information will be shown on the radio display.
All radios installed in 1993/1994 MY vehicles are compatible with CD changers.
The 1993 MY E36 318i/318is will not have a Weather Band function. In addition pressing the buttons to identify the radio does not have any effect. These radios will be modified to incorporate the push button radio identification feature.
The 1993 MY E36 325i/325is/325iC will not have a Weather Band function. This radio provides a 20dB "MUTE" button for instant muting of the radio volume. Pressing the buttons to identify the radio will cause "BMW-ALPINE" to appear in the display.
The 1993 MY E34 535i may exhibit a compatibility problem with certain types of Motorola telephones.
Refer to S.I. bulletin number 65 09 91(3344) for further information. Affected '93 MY 535i Pioneer radios can be identified by a "535i ONLY" decal on the side of the radio.
The 1993 MY E31 will continue to be equipped with a special version Pioneer radio which utilizes a high intensity display suitable to the E31 radio mounting angle.
