M50, S50US Auto Trans

Removing and installing or replacing starter motor (M50,S50US, automatic transmission)

Note instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery. Refer to Service Precautions. Technician Safety Information

- Read fault memory.
- Disconnect battery earth lead.






- Remove complete suction filter.






- Disconnect throttle cable.






- Remove air grill of air manifold box.






- Unscrew screws of cable channel in air manifold.









- Unscrew screws of air manifold box.






- Pull out air manifold box.






- Remove covers of valve cover and intake manifold.






- Disconnect earth wire of ignition coils.






- Unscrew screws (1 and 2).
- Pull off connecting strip.






- Disconnect plug-in connections on ignition coils. Unclip wires in valve cover.
- Place cable channel to one side.






- Unclip hose of cylinder head vent.






- Disconnect plug-in connection for intake-air temperature sensor.






- Disconnect throttle valve assembly heating hoses.






- Pull off hose for tank ventilation.






- Pull off throttle-potentiometer plug-in connection.






- Disconnect hose of fuel supply line (1) and mark adapter.
- Remove hose from fuel return line (2).









- Unclip air supply hose for idling speed control on intake manifold.






- Pull vacuum hose off brake booster.






- Unscrew intake manifold from cylinder head.






- Unscrew support of intake manifold.






Installation:
- Replace seals.






- Unscrew wires on starter.

Installation:

- Check routing of wires.
- Tightening torque, refer to chart below.






- Release support and remove starter.






Installation:
- Check starter pinion for signs of damage.
- Check starter crown wheel for damage.
- Dismantling and reassembling starter motor, refer to Disassembling and Assembling Starter Motor Disassembling and Assembling Starter Motor
