SUBJECT:
Window Glass Drops Slightly After Closing
MODELS:
3 Series (E36) - 1994 Models, 4-Door
Situation:
Complaints may be encountered of the driver's or passenger's window dropping approximate 40 mm when it reaches the top of its travel after closing. Several attempts may be required to fully close the window.
Cause:
The window glass encounters resistance (for example, by rubbing against the interior edge of the window seal) before the "anti-trap" feature is shut off. This anti-trap feature causes the window to stop and reverse its travel if a resistance is encountered. The anti-trap feature is not active during the last 20 mm of upward window travel in order to ensure a good seal. If the depth of penetration of the window glass into the seal is too great, the glass may contact the seal while the anti-trap function is still active, resulting in the reversal of the window travel in some cases.
Correction:
Adjust the depth of the window penetration into the seal to 7 +/- 1 mm, using the procedure described.
Procedure:
1. Ensure that the window penetrates the seal uniformly (adjust if necessary - refer to Repair Manual Section 51-32).
2. Measure the depth of penetration using tool number 51 3 080.
3. If penetration depth is not 7 +/-1 mm, adjust the stop (refer to Repair Manual Section 51-32).
4. Initialize the window by pressing the "up" button, holding the "up" button depressed until after the window glass if fully up.
5. Verify the operation of the "one-touch" feature.
Warranty Information:
Parts and labor are reimbursable under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles.
