Procedure 2
Replacement of steering column slip ring. (To be performed after installation of reinforcement bracket [Procedure 1].)Rotate bayonet catch at bulkhead counterclockwise.
With a small screwdriver, pry up the rubber seal and slide up the steering column.
Grab the conical collar with offset snap ring pliers, and slide up steering column.
If necessary, tap steering wheel with your hand to release spherical collar.
Rotate the spherical collar so that the opening is toward the bottom.
Fabricate a hook tool from 2 mm welding rod.
Dimension A = approx. 100 mm
Dimension B = approx. 6 mm
Insert tool into gap in spherical collar and pull up onto steering column.
Separate the collar and remove from the column. If necessary, cut the collar with diagonal cutters, but use caution not to damage the surface of the steering column.
Shield the area above the steering column with paper or cardboard. Coat steering column all the way around for approximately 150 mm from the bulkhead (A) with spray lubricant. Allow to dry for approximately 10 minutes.
The spherical collar removed from the car will be replaced with a new, two-piece collar (1) with Teflon slip ring (2).
Spread the Teflon ring and install around the column. Snap the two halves of the collar into place around the Teflon ring. The grooves in the collar must point upward, as shown.
Assembly order:
1. Bayonet catch
2. Rubber seal
3. Conical collar
4. Spherical collar with slip ring
Install component in above order and press into bulkhead support. Rotate bayonet catch clockwise until it clicks into place. Reinstall under-dash components.
