Situation

In a single 325iA crash test involving a 30 mph frontal impact with a fixed, rigid barrier, the unbelted driver dummy experienced a chest load, and an unbelted passenger dummy experienced a left femur load, that exceeded the mandated limit according to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208 (FMVSS208).

Subsequently, BMW determined that 1993 and 1994 model year 325i and 325is automobiles and certain 1995 M3 automobiles fail to conform to FMVSS208, Occupant Crash Protection, and is initiating a recall campaign.

In addition, the latest parts will be added to 1993 and 1994 318i and 318is automobiles currently in dealer inventory, even though no determination of noncompliance with FMVSS208 has been made.

Vehicles Affected

At this time, the campaign affects all 1993 and 1994 model year 318i, 318iA, 318is, 318isA and 325iA, and 325 that have not been delivered to retail customers.

Convertible models are not affected.

Campaign parts for 325i, 325is, and M3 models are not currently available. These models will be the subject of a future Service Information when the parts are available.

Due to the limited availability of campaign parts for the above models, this Service Information does not apply to customer vehicles, which will be the subject of a future customer notification campaign when sufficient parts are available.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle affected by this Campaign can be repaired with parts currently available, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquires;" "Vehicle History and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action at this time.

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

Correction:

All affected vehicles will receive a modification to the driver's side knee bolster and steering column support (Procedure 1), a modification to the steering column slip ring at the front bulkhead (Procedure 2), a modification to the steering column trim and attachment (Procedure 3), and a new lower steering spindle and Hardy disc (Procedure 4).

In addition, 325iA and 325isA vehicles will receive modified transmission mounts (Procedure 5).

Parts Information:

Part numbers are given below only for reference. DO NOT ORDER PARTS. Parts will be allocated for the campaign automatically, based on dealer stock of affected vehicles. The special tool, part number 90 88 6 323 010, will be sent via automatic allocation program, part number 20 20 2 044 444.

Two parts kits have been developed for this Recall. Kit 1 will be used on all affected vehicles, and Kit 2 will additionally be used on the 325iA and 325isA.

Spray Lubricant:
The spray lubricant required for Procedure 2 is available under part number 83 23 1 469 057 (part number 20 20 2 033 333 in the automatic allocation program). One can is sufficient for approximately 50 cars. One can will be supplied with the initial parts shipment to each dealer.

Recall Label Instructions:
This Recall has been assigned code number 122. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 122 printed on the label (2); and





c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
