Procedure 4

Replacement of lower steering spindle.

Lock steering in straight ahead position. Remove lock bolt from upper end of spindle, and both lock bolts from the joint assembly at the lower end of spindle. Slide the spindle up, and remove the lower joint assembly from the steering rack and spindle. Slide the spindle down and remove.

New spindle with 8 ribs.

Slide new spindle onto upper splines until it bottoms out. The bolt hole (1) must be on the inboard side and perpendicular.

Make sure that wheels are centered. Slide the joint assembly onto the spindle and steering rack so that the center point indicators on the rack align with side of the joint assembly as shown. The pinch gap (1) will point straight down.

Center the bolt holes in position and install the locking bolts with new nuts in the steering rack clamp (1), lower spindle clamp (2) and the upper spindle clamp. Tighten to 19 N-m.

Assembly check:
The upper spindle bolt and the top bolt on the Hardy disc assembly should be in a vertical position.

The lower bolt on the Hardy disc assembly should be horizontal.

The steering wheel and rack must remain in center position.
