Campaign - Throttle Body Assembly Inspection

Group 13
Fuel System

Bulletin Number
13 03 94 (4042)

Woodcliff Lake, NJ
September 1994
Product - Engineering

THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Throttle Body Assembly

MODELS:
E36 with M42 Engine

Situation:
The secondary throttle plate may cause an increased gas pedal effort when opened during acceleration after driving at constant speeds, due to a design change in the crankcase ventilation system on vehicles produced after 1/94 and the elimination of the lubrication spray coating in the throttle body assembly.

Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action involves E36 vehicles with M42 engines which were produced from 1/94 - 6/94.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.

Correction:
Check the throttle body assembly for a color marking; clean and lubricate the secondary throttle plate if necessary.

Procedure:
Check the front of the throttle body assembly (on small round cover; see illustration) for a paint marking. If a blue, green, or yellow marking is found, the throttle body cleaning and lubrication has been carried out at the factory and and no further action is necessary.

If no paint marking is found perform the following repair procedure:

- Remove the intake air bellows boot located between the volume air flow meter and the throttle body.

- With the throttle plate open and using a lint free cloth, clean the throttle body and secondary plate assembly.

- Using Optimoly Paste TA Spray, BMW part number 83 23 1 468 932, spray around the throttle plate pivot shaft inside of the throttle body and also a 2 cm (3/4 inch) wide strip of lubricant where the throttle plate rests in its closed position, as shown (1) and (2) in the illustration.

- Reinstall the intake air bellows boot.

Caution:
Only a thin coating of Optimoly Paste TA spray is needed in the designated areas to assure proper throttle plate lubrication. Do not apply a thick coat. To assure proper throttle plate operation under all temperature conditions only Optimoly Paste TA spray, BMW part number 83 23 1 468 932, should be used as described above.

Parts Information:
Part Number Quantity Description
83 23 1 468 932 1 Optimoly Paste TA

Note:
Since only a thin coating of Optimoly Paste TA spray is needed per vehicle and one can will be sufficient for a number of vehicles, it is recommended to order one can for your initial stock, and further orders on an as needed basis only to avoid overstocking.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 116. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-031) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 116 printed on the label (2); and,

c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Emissions Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
