SUBJECT:
Ratcheting/Clicking Noise from A/C Compressor After Turn-Off

MODELS:
E36 with M42 Engine, 4/94-5/94 production

Situation:

Complaint of intermittent clicking or ratcheting-like noise for about 5 seconds after the A/C compressor shuts or cycles off.

Affected Vehicles:

E36 vehicles with the M42 engine, produced 4/94 to 5/94, may exhibit this problem. The affected compressors have a range of date codes (on the compressor label) starting with "940127XXXX" and ending with "940329XXXX." All compressors must have a date code within this range (January 27, 1994 through March 29, 1994 compressor production) to qualify for this repair.

Cause:

Due to an internal compressor assembly error, after shutoff the high pressure refrigerant can flow in reverse, turn the compressor backwards, and cause this noise.

Solution:

If a customer complaint of this type of noise originating from the compressor is encountered, replace the NC compressor with P/N 6452 8 390228.
