Sunroof / Moonroof Panel: Service and Repair
Removing and Installing Lid on Slide/Tilt Sun Roof:
CAUTION!
Do not move floating roof liner with force.
Follow this procedure precisely because otherwise mechanism (guide/rotary tumbler) on slide/tilt sun roof cassette can become damaged and must then be replaced.
Closing slide/tilt sun roof lid (zero setting).
Removal:
Turn winder counterclockwise until resistance is felt (dead travel).
Continue turning winder about 1/2 turn.
Slide/tilt sun roof with electrical actuation:
Briefly touch button to open the roof.
The slide/tilt sun roof lid must now lower at back by dimension (A).
Dimension (A) = 2...4 mm
CAUTION!
Quick movement of the floating roof liner could damage the mechanism (guide/rotary catch) of the sun roof cassette.
Do not move floating roof liner with force.
Slowly slide floating roof liner right back (with clean hands, or wearing protective gloves).
Shut sun roof (neutral position).
CAUTION! Slide/tilt sun roof can now no longer be moved in "OPEN" direction (damage to mechanism).
Unfasten nuts (and screws where applicable).
Tightening Torque = 6 Nm
/Unfasten left/right screw.
Tightening Torque = 6 Nm
Raise slide/tilt sun roof lid (1) at back until adjusting levers on left/right can be lifted out of retaining pin (2) of slide/tilt sun roof lid (1).
Place lid of slide/tilt sun roof on clean base.
Check zero setting of mechanism:
If necessary, adjust mechanism of slide/tilt sun roof using transmission or emergency handle (power roof) until dimension (A) is reached (zero setting)
Distance (A) = 322 mm
Edges (1) and (2) must be aligned.
NOTE:
If necessary, remove transmission from slide/tilt sun roof cassette,
Version with power actuation:
Build status up to 1994:
Turn engine/transmission into neutral position with help of emergency operator.
Shaft center points, notch and pin must be aligned.
Build status from mid-1994:
Zero setting is no longer visible to naked eye. Zero setting is the cutout position which can be reached in both directions of rotation (power-driven).
Only approach position on longer travel (hysteresis).
Version with manual actuation:
Mount winder on removed transmission and turn clockwise or counterclockwise until locking in transmission becomes apparent (neutral position).
Installation:
Install adjusting levers on left/right to lid of slide/tilt sun roof Retaining pin (1) must locate correctly in bore (2)
Replace screws (1) (microencapsulation) or refit old screws with Loctite 27C
(Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service).
Pull up adjusting lever and tighten screws (1) firmly down.
Do not tighten down!
Only on version with carriage without retaining spring:
Unscrew retaining screw (2) left/right until assembly aperture is open.
Coat protruding thread with Loctite 270 (Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service).
NOTE: Hardening of Loctite 270 takes about 30 minutes.
Install slide/tilt sun roof lid, ensuring that adjusting levers (1) locate correctly at front left/right sides in carriage (2).
CAUTION!
Check lid for tight fit.
Press slide/tilt sun roof lid upwards to front left/right with palms of hands from below.
It should not be possible to raise the slide/tilt sun roof cover.
Press slide/tilt sun roof forwards.
Replace all nuts (microencapsulation) or refit old nuts with Loctite 270
(Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service).
Turn nuts (2) as far as stop.
Do not tighten!
Lower slide/tilt sun roof lid at back by dimension (A).
Dimension (A) = 2-4 mm
Slowly pull the floating roof liner forward as far as possible.
Only version with carriage and no retaining springs:
Open sun roof lid about 250 mm.
Carefully press slide/tilt sun roof lid upwards, insert retaining screws (2) at left and right and tighten down.
Adjust slide/tilt sun roof.
Only version with carriage and retaining springs:
NOTE:
If carriages with retaining springs (1) are fitted, do not install retaining screws in thread (2).
