THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES WHENEVER SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR.

SUBJECT:
VANOS Solenoid Valve Torque

MODELS:
E34 and E36 with M50 TU Engine

Situation:
The electromagnetic solenoid valve used on the Variable Camshaft Control System (VANOS) may leak oil due to an insufficient tightening torque during engine assembly. It may also occur that, although the correct torque has been applied, the O-ring of the solenoid valve is not sealing properly in the VANOS adjusting unit housing due to unfavorable tolerances in the sealing groove.

Vehicles
Affected:
This Service Action involves E34 and E36 vehicles which were produced from 8/92-9/92.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle in this range is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCS (Dealer Communications System). Proceed to "Vehicle History Inquiry" and enter the Chassis Number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges, but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision factor is the DCS inquiry.
