THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT:
Replacement of Rear Battery Tray Mount
MODELS:
325i Convertible
Situation:
325i Convertibles produced until mid-June 1993 have a rear battery tray mount which may crack over time. Later production vehicles have a heavier mount to prevent this problem.
In order to prevent unnecessary customer complaints, a Service Action to replace the affected mounts will be performed.
Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action is a preventative measure and involves vehicles which were produced between 3/93 and 6/93.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.
Correction:
Replace the rear battery tray mount, part number 41 11 8 171 147.
- Remove the trunk mat, battery cover, battery, jack, and spare.
- Remove battery tray and replace if necessary. (Refer to S.I. 51 13 93 (3893)).
- Remove lower bumper valance.
- Mark the position of the rear mount, drill out welds and remove mount.
- Plug weld the new mount in place.
- Clean up area, prime and paint with spray can. Undercoat as needed.
- Reinstall removed parts.
Service Action Label Instruction:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 101. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-031) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 101 printed on the label (2); and
c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the "B" pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from a underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
Warranty Status:
Covered under the terms of the applicable BMW New Car Warranty. Reimbursement for this repair will be via Campaign Entry.
