THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR.

SUBJECT:
Carbon Canister

MODELS:
E36

Situation:
The carbon canister which is used in the fuel tank ventilation systems of E36 vehicles (with M42 and M50 engines) may have a manufacturing quality shortcoming. The lower section of the carbon canister may work its way loose and fall out when driving over rough road surfaces, causing a possible rough idle condition due to the large amount of unmetered air being drawn into the engine.

Vehicles
Affected:
This Service Action is a preventative measure and involves vehicles which were produced between 6/92 and 7/92.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle in this range is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCS (Dealer Communications System). Proceed to "Vehicle History Inquiry" and enter the Chassis Number (last seven) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges, but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision factor is the DCS inquiry.

Model Chassis Number Ranges

325i/2 EF 37682 - EF 37801
325i/2 A EK 03324 - EK 03550
325i/4 FE 08937 - FE 09080

318i/2 FG 03087 - FG 03364
318i/4 JA 02556 - JA 02756

Correction:
All affected vehicles must have the carbon canister replaced. The BMW part number (16 13 1 181 217) remains unchanged.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 84. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-008) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label.

b) punch out code number 84 printed on the label.

c) bend label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix it to the B pillar as shown.

If the car already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix this label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched out hole of the new label.

Warranty
Information:
Covered under the terms of the applicable BMW Emissions System Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
