THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT:
Replacement of Top Storage Lid Latching Cables
MODELS:
325i Convertible (E36)
Situation:
325i Convertibles produced up until mid-May 1993 used a type of latching cable for the top storage lid that may bind, causing the lid not to close completely when the top is lowered.
In order to prevent any unnecessary customer complaints, a Service Action will be performed to replace the early style cables.
Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action is a preventative measure and involves vehicles which were produced between 3/93 and 5/93.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries; ""Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.
Correction:
Replace the old style cables with new style cables, which have a 1.8 mm diameter inner cable, without a plastic coating on the inner cable.
Replacement procedures are covered in the Repair Manual, page 54-25/5.
Parts Information:
Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 98. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-008) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 98 printed on the label (2); and
c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the "B" pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
Warranty Status:
Covered under the terms of the applicable BMW New Car Warranty. Reimbursement for this repair will be via Campaign Entry.
