THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Replacement of Top Actuating Rod

MODELS:
325i Convertible (E36)

Situation:
A change to strengthen the convertible top actuating rod, part number 54 34 8 135 287, was phased into production in June 1993.

The change consisted of welding a reinforcing bar to the actuating rod, and covering the reinforced area with shrink tubing.

A Service Action will be performed to update the early production vehicles.

Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action is a preventative measure and involves vehicles which were produced between 3/93 and 6/93.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.

Correction:
All affected vehicles must have the top actuating rod replaced.

Parts Information:

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 99. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-008) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 99 printed on the label (2); and

c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the "B" pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Status:
Covered under the terms of the applicable BMW New Car Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
