Wind Whistles

E36
Situation:
Some E36s may exhibit wind whistles from certain areas, which can be verified as described below:
A. Around hood/headlights above approximately 55 mph. Verify by taping closed the gap between the headlights and hood.
B. Around door mirrors above approximately 60 mph. Verify by folding mirrors in. Only valid for cars produced before 4/92.
C. Area of engine compartment bulkhead on driver's side. Verify by operating vent flaps and checking if noise changes.
Correction
A: Install seals between headlights and hood. Refer to enclosure 1.

Note:
The following explanations will spell out the correct use of the work times.
Main Work: Use this time when the only repair performed is the listed warranty repair.
OR
Associated Work: Use this time when other repairs or services are performed along with the listed warranty repair.
Under no circumstances should both work times be claimed. Attempts to claim both times will result in an unnecessary delay in claim processing and payment.
Mark the front edge of the engine compartment lid at the top of the headlamp lens with adhesive tape.
Open the engine compartment lid, attach double-sided tape (3) behind the marking (4) on the headlight lens. Remove protective backing.
Stick seal (2) in position. Again allow approx. 20 mm overhang at each end.
Note:
Attach the seal so that the thicker edge is towards the front of the car.
Trim the overhanging ends of the seal and attach using compound adhesive.
Close the engine compartment lid and check the alignment of the seal.
The seal should not be visible anywhere along the edge of the engine compartment lid.

headlamps - fitting seals
Open the engine compartment lid, loosen bolts and remove paneling.
Shorten the paneling along length (A) and (B) evenly:
- Draw line to cut along on the paneling
- Ensure the lines on length (A) and length (B) fade out evenly
- Shorten paneling
Length (A) = 4 mm
Length (B) = 0 mm
Fit paneling and seal, leave approx. 20 mm overhang on the seal left and right.
Tighten the bolts.
Close the engine compartment lid, check that the headlamps are positioned correctly and adjust as necessary.

Note:
The description below applies for the left-hand door mirror. The right-hand one should be fitted in a similar manner.
Mirror caps:
A = old mirror cap (round)
B = new mirror cap (squared)
Tilt the mirror glass.
Unstick mirror glass and edge of casing.
- avoid damaging parts -
Attention:
Ensure the vehicle is at room temperature so that the clips do not snap off.
Unclip the mirror glass using a wide wooden wedge. Disconnect the plugs and remove the mirror glass.
Note on installation:
Position the mirror glass so that the retaining clips are lined up with the lugs and clip glass into position.
Ensure it clicks into position correctly.
Loosen screws (2).
Pull the bezel forward slightly, push the retaining clips together and remove the mirror cap.
Note on installation:
- Fit bezel back into place
- Clip on new mirror cap
- Clip mirror glass back in

Remove the paneling underneath the instrument panel on the drivers side.
Form the sealing/tape material to a lump 60 x 20 x 10 mm in size and seal the doubled metal sheeting.
Put back parts in reverse order.
