This Service Information bulletin supersedes the orange Service Information bulletin number 64 10 93 (3915) dated November 1993. Please remove and discard orange Service Information bulletin 64 10 93 (3915) dated November 1993.

THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Rear Window Defogger Not Operating/Poor Radio Reception

MODELS:
E36 (11/92-5/93 production) equipped with Diversity antenna

Complaint:
Rear window defogger is ineffective, and/or poor radio reception of weak stations, especially on FM.

Cause:
The wires for the Diversity antenna module in the right-side (passenger's) C-pillar are connection to the rear window reversed. This causes the "antenna" function and the "defogger" function of the window glass grid to be ineffective.

Affected Vehicles:
This Service Action involves 1993 model year E36 vehicles.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.

Correction:

If the above complaint(s) are encountered, remove the passenger-side C-pillar cover and examine the wiring. Exchange the two wire lead connectors to the rear window glass. The wiring should "cross" as shown in the second illustration.

E36 with DIVERSITY ANTENNA:
Passenger-side C-pillar Cover Removed

Note:
A non-Diversity E36 does not have the amplifier module under the RIGHT-SIDE C- pillar cover. Non-Diversity vehicles contain only a small coupler module in that location.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 108. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-031) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 108 printed on the label (2); and

c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the "B" pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:
Parts and labor covered under the terms of the applicable BMW New Car Limited Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
