SUBJECT:
Interior Light (Dome Light) Falls Out of Frame

MODELS:
E36

Situation:
If the front interior light (ahead of sunroof) is installed into the opening with the lens in place, the sheet metal frame may get bent in such a manner as to prevent the metal hook tabs from securing the light assembly. The interior light may then fall out of the opening with road vibration.

Cause:
The interior light housing has flexible plastic locking hooks on the edge of the assembly. These hooks will flex and snap onto the metal light frame when installed into the opening. If the lens is in place, the locking hooks cannot flex properly and thus bend the metal frame as the assembly is installed.

Remedy:
The sheet metal frame must be straightened to original shape. Remove the plastic lens from the light assembly. Install one edge of the light assembly and lever the other edge into place slowly. Once the light snaps tight, the lens cover can be snapped into place properly.

This information will be included in the next editions of the Repair Manual and the Owner's Manual.
