SUBJECT:
Looseness or Play in Front Seat
MODELS:
E36
Situation:
Some seats may exhibit excessive play at the contact point between the sliders and guides for the height adjustment. This play may lead to complaints of the seat wobbling, or excessive backrest play.
A special tool (P/N 88 88 6 521 200) has been developed to set the play between the height adjustment sliders and guides. This will eliminate the excess play and correct the wobbling condition as well as reducing the apparent play in the backrest.
Repair
Procedure:
Please use the enclosed instruction sheets as your repair procedure.
SPECIAL NOTE:
The removal procedure for the seat cushion has been changed. Instead of pulling the cushion off, the plastic retainer pins (P/N 52 10 8 130 678) are cut off first, allowing the cushion to be removed with less chance of damage. This procedure should be used on all repairs requiring removal of the seat cushion. Please refer to page 1 of enclosure for details.

Operate seat forward (1) as far as possible. Operate seat up (2) as far as possible.
Pinch tunnel-side clip off using snippers.
Operate seat backwards as far as possible. Pinch left/right front clips off using snippers.
Tilt backrest back as far as possible. Unclip side member side clip carefully with seat cushion upholstery vertically upwards.
Unscrew screws. Lift seat shell.
Important! Ensure that cables and knee pieces are not damaged.
Disconnect cable for belt tensioner by turning the toggle 90~ and then disengaging the cable vertically upwards.
Apply Special Tool 52 1 200 on outside slider. Tighten nut (1) to 24 N-m.
Important! Conform with tightening torque steps. Excessive torque would lead to seizure of the seat height control.
Remove special tool. Press down on seat frame firmly and measure play between slider (2) and guide (1) using a 5/100 mm feeler gage blade.
Play > 5/100 mm:
Apply special tool again and tighten nut (1) with an additional 2 N-m torque. Keep repeating this step until the play is < 5/100 mm.
Apply Special Tool 52 1 200 on inside slider and, as for the outside slider, press until the play is < 5/100 mm.
Remove old grease from both guides and lubricate the guides with new grease. Grease: Kluber Isoflex Topas NB 5051 (supplied with special tool).
Connect the belt tensioner cable and turn the toggle 90~.
Tighten seat shell screws. Tightening torque = 8 N-m.
If applicable, remove remainders of clips.
Pinch off heads of clips in the seat cushion upholstery using wire cutting pliers (head of pliers ground to size).
Insert new clips and clip seat cushion upholstery into seat shell. Check function by operating the seat height control up and down several times (checking for easy movement).
