SUBJECT: Malfunction or Failure of Individual Components in Instrument Cluster
MODELS: 3 Series (E36)
Situation: If a component in the Instrument Cluster malfunctions or fails, ensure that this is not caused by any external part, such as plug connections, wires, sensors, etc.
In each case, a diagnosis printout must be produced and enclosed with a properly filled out warranty tag.
(Please note that an Instrument Cluster self-test can still be performed by means of the reset button.)
During the warranty period, this Instrument Cluster will only be exchanged as a complete unit. If the unit is opened, there will be no warranty coverage.
Parts
Information: Ordering procedure is as follows:
1. If coding is performed in the workshop with the MoDiC (possible using diskette "Coding Version 3.01 "), only the part number of the Instrument Cluster needs to be quoted.
2. If coding in the workshop is not possible, a coded Instrument Cluster must be ordered. In addition to the part number, the chassis number (last 7 digits) and the central coding key (48 digits, on the label located under the rear seats, in the center) must be specified.
Note: Whenever an Instrument Cluster is replaced, the Service Interval Indicator should be reset (OIL SERVICE and INSPECTION) as this function is still "undefined" on a new part.
If any of the green LEDs of the Service Interval Indicator in the old instrument cluster have gone out, estimate the remaining mileage until the next required service and advise the customer accordingly.
