SUBJECT: ABS Rear Wheel Speed Sensor

MODELS: 3 Series (E36) - 1992 Models


Situation: Diagnosis of a faulted ABS System with the BMW Service Tester may show the following faults in memory:

- 84 or 88 wheel speed sensor missing/defective, left rear/right rear

- 100 or 104 wheel speed signal not plausible, left rear/right rear

Cause: Poor solder connections at the coil connections of the ABS wheel speed sensor at either rear wheel.





Correction: The solder connections were improved as of production date code "0811" (81st day of 1991). Refer to the diagram below for the location of the date codes.


If these fault codes occur and the date code of the failed sensor is "0801" or lower, replace both rear wheel speed sensors.

Parts
Information: The replacement sensors (P/N 34 52 1 181 126; qty. 2) must have a production date code of "0811" or higher.

Limited Warranty of 4 Years/50,000 Miles.

Note: Labor for "Inspecting Both Sensors" cannot be claimed together with labor for "Inspecting & Replacing Both Sensors".

Labor operation 61 12 525 can be used in conjunction with labor operation 34 50 000 "Checking Function of ABS".
