SUBJECT:
Additional Window Stops

MODELS:
E30 Convertibles

Situation:
Beginning with approximately May 91 production, E30 convertibles have had an additional window stop installed to limit upward travel. This additional stop consists of a fixed piece fastened to the inner door skin and an adjustable stop screw fastened to the window regulator arm.

Adjustment of the stop is accomplished by lowering the window completely and turning the adjustable stop screw. The stop screw is accessed by removing the center plastic plug in the bottom of the door.

Please note that the original stop (accessible behind the plastic cover in the inner door panel) is still installed and must also be adjusted.

The new style stop can be installed on earlier cars if necessary in case the original stop becomes ineffective due to wear or stripping of the threads from over tightening. Please follow the installation instructions.

Warranty Status:

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty.

a) Window stop on inner metal door panel:

- Remove door paneling, pull back waterproof sheet.

- Place enclosed template against the inner metal door panel (see figure 1) and mark positions of holes (arrowed).

- Reverse template for other side (mirror image).

- Drill 3 holes 5.5 mm in diameter.

- Vacuum off any swarf and protect holes against corrosion with a touch-up stick.

- Fit the window regulator stop on the inner metal door panel (see figure 2).

b) Stop on window regulator arm:

- Hold the stop in place on the already existing slot in the window regulator arm pointing toward the crossed linkage joint. At the same time, push the stop down as far as it will go (see figure 3).

- Drill a second mounting hole 5.5 mm in dia. through the window regulator arm (occurs automatically), see figure 3, arrow.

- Fit window stop.

- Bend the door release linkage so far outwards that the window regulator stop can move past it freely and without obstruction when the window is opened or closed. If necessary, adjust the door release plate.

- Release standard height stop on window regulator.

- Close the window completely, set new height guide stop precisely (with running engine or with a battery charger hooked up).

- Push the standard stop in the slot upwards and tighten.
