Impact Sensor: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
Impact sensors (left and right front) provide critical information concerning the rate of deceleration and angle of a frontal impact. Working in conjunction with the safing sensor, located within the control module, they insure that the airbag is deployed only during front end collisions of a specific type and severity level.
OPERATION
As soon as there is an impact with sufficient force in the designated area, the weighted roller (3) makes contact with the spring contact (2) completing the electrical circuit necessary for system operation.
Minor collision (under 12 mph), roll over, or side and rear end impact have no effect the impact sensor.
