Fuel Pump Relay: Testing and Inspection

Fuel Pump Relay Diagram:

Fuel Pump Relay Terminal Identification:

Perform the following test if the fuel pump will not energize.

1. Check for open fuel pump circuit fuse in the power distribution box. Replace the fuse as necessary.
2. Remove the fuel pump relay and bridge terminals 2 and 6 on the relay socket with a fused jumper.

The fuel pump should run. If the fuel pump does not run, check the circuit from terminal 2 of the fuel pump relay socket to the fuel pump. If the circuit is OK, refer to FUEL PUMP for testing the fuel pump. If the fuel pump runs, continue.

3. Remove the fused jumper and measure the voltage at terminal 6 of the fuel pump relay socket.

Reading = battery volts. If not check the circuit to battery positive for opens.

4. Measure resistance to ground at terminal 4 of the fuel pump relay socket while cranking the engine.

Reading = 0 ohms. If not, check for open circuit to the DME control unit. If the circuit is OK, the DME control unit may be defective.

5. Measure voltage at terminal 8 of the fuel pump relay socket while cranking the engine.

Reading = battery volts. If not, check circuit to the DME main relay for opens. If the circuit is OK, the DME main relay may be defective.

If all circuits test OK, replace the fuel pump relay.
