Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Description and Operation

The "Check Engine" light illuminates on the instrument cluster if the DME control unit detects a condition that would cause the vehicle to exceed exhaust emission standards. Under normal operating conditions the light will illuminate when the ignition is turned to the run position (ON) or start position and go out after the engine has started. If the light continues to illuminate after the engine has started or does not illuminate in the run (ON) or start position a fault is indicated.
