SUBJECT:
Feed Fuel Hose Recall Campaign No. 94V-066
MODELS:
E34 with M20, M50 Engines
Situation:
The potential condition involves feed fuel hoses that could, in some cases, harden and "set" over time due to engine compartment temperatures. If this "setting" occurs, it is possible that seepage between the hose and fitting could result because the clamp cannot provide sufficient sealing force to compensate for the hardening of the hose.
This "setting/hardening" effect of the hose tends to occur when there is no fuel flow and in conjunction with high engine compartment temperatures - i.e., with engine off after running (e.g overnight). Because fuel flow causes the hose to soften and expand, thereby sealing the hose/fitting connection, the seepage tends to occur only at and immediately after engine start-up.
Vehicles Affected:
This Recall Campaign involves E34 vehicles with M20 and M50 engines which were produced from 6/88-8/90 (M20) and 9/90-1/93 (M50).
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the Chassis Number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the installation or take no further action.
The Chassis Numbers are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges, but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Recall Campaign. The final decision factor is the DCS inquiry.
In order to update the affected E34 vehicles, all feed fuel hoses (1) located in the engine compartment and fuel hose clamps (2) must be replaced with the new style components included in the parts kit (see illustrations).
The new fuel hose includes in the parts kit can be identified by the blue writing on the black rubber background and should only be installed in conjunction with the new style clamps.
The new style fuel hose clamp can be identified by the plastic shear-off hex nut head (5 mm hex) and drive sleeve (see illustration - item (1) and (2)) and, with the drive sleeve removed, by the slanted screw driver slot (item(3)) used only for loosening the clamp.
When the clamp is installed it should be tightened until 5 mm shear-off hex shears off, thus assuring the proper torque. When removing the new style clamp it may be necessary to remove the plastic drive sleeve (item number 2) with a pair of pliers first.
Important Notes:
- The new style hose clamp is a "one time" clamp, i.e. whenever removal becomes necessary it cannot be reused and must be replaced.
- Whenever a fuel hose is removed from a fuel line/component in the engine compartment the hose and clamps must be replaced with the optimized fuel hose and new style clamps.

Recall Campaign Label Instructions:
This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 89. After the vehicle has been checked and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-008) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 89 printed on the label (2); and,
c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the "B" pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from a underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
Warranty Information:
Reimbursement for this Recall Campaign will be provided through Campaign Entry.
