SUBJECT: Driveshaft Vibration and Noise
MODELS: 535i, M5; 635CSi, M6
Complaint: In isolated cases, vibration may be noticed during hard acceleration or while driving.
Correction: Replace center bearing with a new bearing (P/N 26121226628) which provides greater lateral offset.
Notes:
1. Prior to any component replacement for driveshaft related complaints, review and consider the following S.I. bulletins:

26 01 85 (980) Driveshaft Deflection Angles
26 02 84 (895) Driveshaft Troubleshooting
2. Center bearing preload must be set precisely to specifications.
E24/E28 Center Bearing Preload:
4 - 6 mm in the forward direction
3. After installation of driveshaft, the threaded sleeve must be tightened precisely to specifications.
Tightening torque: 22 N-m/16 ft.lbs. with BMW Special Tool P/N 88 6 261 040.
4. All driveshaft handling safeguards must be strictly adhered to. Improper handling practices can result in damage which would make the driveshaft unusable.
