Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair



Replacing Complete Steering Lock:

Since 1986 Models:




- Disconnect the battery ground lead.
- Remove the steering wheel.
- Remove the steering column casing.




- Take off the flasher relay.
- Pull off the plug on the horn contact.
- Remove the switch.

Installation:
- Mount both ground wires (1).
- Screw (2) = M 5 x 15 in cars with cruise control switch.
- Tabs of the switch must engage in bore (3).




- Take off collar ring (1).

Installation:
- The recess in the collar ring (1) must hold the snap ring (2).




- Remove snap ring (1), washer (2), spring (3) and ring (4).

Installation:
- The stem of ring (4) faces the bearing.

Installation:




- Mount snap ring (1) with Special Tools 32 3 052 and 32 3 050 (hammer knock),




- Press down the locking hook and take off the ignition switch.




- Lift out the steering spindle bearing with a screwdriver.

Installation:
- Knock in the bearing with Special Tool 00 5 550.




- Remove the shear off screw (1) with a chisel.
- Pull the steering lock and upper casing section off of the outer tube.

Installation:
- Tighten the E 8 Torx shear-off screw with Special Tool 32 3 120.




- Press down the lock with a screwdriver.
- Turn the key until it is stopped and pull out the lock cylinder.




- Drill off the rivets and screw the carbon brush contact (1) on the new steering lock
