Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Prior to disconnecting fuel lines, disconnect master relay and carefully depressurize fuel system.
Mark installation position of all components, electrical connectors and hoses prior to removal. Cylinder head and exhaust manifold are removed as an assembly.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Remove ignition lead tube, then disconnect hose and pull out spark plug connectors.
3. Remove cylinder head cover attaching bolts, then remove cylinder head cover.
4. Secure pulley, then remove engine cooling fan nut, and the fan and clutch assembly. Fan retaining nut has left hand threads.
5. Remove distributor cap, then the distributor rotor, adapter and cover.
6. Remove distributor housing and cover.
7. Remove guide rails.
8. Rotate crankshaft to position piston of No. 1 cylinder at top dead center on compression stroke, using tool No. 113020 or equivalent. No. Six cylinder overlaps.
9. Remove chain tensioner, then open lock plates and remove sprockets.
10. Mount tool No. 113010 on timing case, then rotate shaft on tool up to stop. Tool will allow camshaft to be held down for removal of bearing caps.
11. Remove bearing caps, then release tool tension.
12. Remove tool, then mark camshafts ``E'' and ``A.''
13. Remove camshafts, then using tool No. 113030, remove cam followers.
14. Remove clamps and pipes necessary to facilitate removal of timing case.
15. Remove timing case attaching bolts, then the timing case.
16. Reverse procedure to install. Ensure to install cam followers in original position.
