Gear oil at about 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature).

Transmission Installed

Move vehicle onto a four-pillar shop hoist or over a work pit so that it is absolutely horizontal.

- Remove the rear noise insulation - 2 -.

There is a risk of damaging the transmission.

Without any or with too little manual transmission fluid inside the transmission:

Do not start the engine and

Do not tow the vehicle

- Place the (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.

Danger of eye injury.

Wear protective eyewear.

Place a cloth over the tunnel crossmember to prevent transmission fluid Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF) from getting into the cast pockets on the top.

In the following description, vehicles with drain plugs for the MTF are differentiated from vehicles with transmission fluid temperature sensor 2 (G754) in place of drain plugs for the MTF.

- Place a cloth over the tunnel crossmember.

Vehicles with a Transmission Fluid MTF Drain Plug - arrow -:

The MTF drain plug is located behind the transmission fluid.

- Remove the MTF drain plug - arrow - on the bottom of the transmission housing.

- Drain the MTF.

- Tighten the MTF drain plug - arrow -.

Tightening specification, refer to => [ Manual Transmission Fluid Drain, Fill, and Check Plugs Overview ] Manual Transmission Fluid Drain, Fill, and Check Plugs Overview

Vehicles with Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor 2 - 1 - Instead of a MTF Drain Plug:

- Transmission installed in the vehicle: turn off the ignition.

The connector on the transmission fluid temperature sensor 2 can be disconnected only when the ignition is turned off. The transmission will switch to emergency mode if the ignition is on. The counter for the increased temperature will count up and a fault will be stored in the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J217) after 10 minutes.

- Disconnect the connector - 2 - from transmission fluid temperature sensor 2 and tie it up.

Protect the connector - 2 - and the contacts on transmission fluid temperature sensor 2 from the transmission fluid. Clean the connectors immediately if they come in contact with transmission fluid (MTF). Transmission fluid can cause contact problems in the connector contacts.

- Remove transmission fluid temperature sensor 2 (G754) - 1 -.

- Drain the MTF.

- Tighten the transmission fluid temperature sensor 2 - 1 - and connect the connector - 2 -.
