Convertible Top, Headliner







Headliner

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pop Rivet Pliers (VAS 5072)

Drill

4 mm Drill Bit

Protective Eyewear

Mark the rubber bands, the tension cables and the electric wires and their installed locations prior to removal to prevent confusing them up later. Draw a sketch or take a picture of them if necessary.

Noise from moving components.

Always vacuum out the metal shavings from the openings left behind after drilling out the blind rivets to prevent noise from occurring in the moveable components i.e. rails.

Removing






- Remove the front trim. Refer to => [ Front Trim ] Front Trim.

- Drill out the blind rivet - arrow - for the convertible top headliner mount from the front left and right rails and strike the rivet shaft.

- Remove the bolts - 1 - from the retaining strip - 2 - for the convertible top cover/convertible top headliner - arrows -.






- Drive the convertible top upward until the front rail is vertical.






- Remove the retaining strip - 1 - to the side - arrow - from the convertible top cover/convertible top headliner.

- Drill out the blind rivet - arrow a -, remove the diverting eye, and strike the rivet shaft.






- Drill out the blind rivet on the left and right spring - 1 - and strike the rivet shaft.

- Drill out the blind rivet - arrow b - from the bracket for the spring - 2 - and strike the rivet shaft.

- Remove the nut - 1 - on "rail 1" and remove the bracket - 2 -.






- Drill out the blind rivets - arrow - on both sides, remove the diverting eye, and strike the rivet shaft.

- Drill out the blind rivet - arrow - from the diverting eye - 1 - for the roof guide and strike the rivet shaft.






- Drill out the blind rivet - arrow - from the diverting eye - 1 - on the main guide and strike the rivet shaft.






- Drill out the blind rivets - arrows - from the diverting eye and strike the rivet shaft.






- Remove the screw - arrow - on the convertible top headliner control bracket - 1 -.






- Drill out the blind rivet - arrow - from the spring - 1 - and strike the rivet shaft.






- Remove the convertible top headliner from the bracket starting by the straps the outside and using pliers - arrow -.






The bracket is shown in the cut-out section in the illustration.

- Remove the convertible top headliner profile - 2 - from the bracket - 1 -.






- Insert the convertible top headliner into the vehicle interior.

- Drill out the blind rivets - arrow - from the diverting eye on "Rail 2" and strike the rivet shaft.






- Drill out the blind rivets - arrow - from the diverting eye on "Rail 4" and strike the rivet shaft.






- Remove the rod - arrow - from the loop in the headliner.






- This disengages the convertible top headliner straps - 1 -.

If the retaining rod gets jammed while it is being removed, remove the cap on the opposite side.

- Remove the rear interior lamp - 2 - for vehicles with "Acoustic Cover".






- Remove the tensioning strap - 3 - from the frame - 1 - and free it up from the convertible top cover.

Danger of causing damage to the convertible top cover, tension- and guide cable.

When removing the convertible top headliner, do not cut the convertible top cover, tension- or guide cable.

- Use scissors to disconnect and remove the convertible top headliner.






Cut the convertible top headliner - 1 - at the distance - a - in a straight line from the outer edge - 2 - towards the rear window up to the main bearing.

Dimension - a - = 5 cm.

Do not cut the adhesive tape on "Rails 1 and 2".

- Drill out the blind rivets - arrows - from the fold assist - 2 -, from the mounting strap - 1 - and strike the rivet shaft.






- Fold up the convertible top headliner - 1 - and remove it to the right from the convertible top frame - arrow -.






Remove the protective strip for the convertible top headliner from the groove for "Rail 1 and 2".

Installation






Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Replace self-locking screws.

Always place the cap - 2 - on the retaining rod - 1 - to avoid damaging the convertible top headliner.

- Clean off any locking fluid residue with a thread cutter in the threaded holes in which the self-locking screws are installed.

- Install the convertible top headliner and guide the protective strip into the groove for "Rail 1 and 2" at the same time.

- Reattach the tension- and guide cable on the right side for the convertible top headliner identical to those on the left side, refer to => [ Front Tension and Guide Cables ] Headliner, Tension and Guide Cable Overview.

- Remove the old convertible top headliner and reattach the tension- and guide cables identical to the right side, refer to => [ Front Tension and Guide Cables ] Headliner, Tension and Guide Cable Overview.

- Install the rear interior lamp.

- Install the front trim. Refer to => [ Front Trim ] Front Trim.
