Rear Driveshaft
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Transmission Support (VW 785/1 B)
• Approximately 600 mm pry lever (for example 652-24 Hazet)
Removing
- Loosen the nuts - arrow - on the right and left sides and turn the tail pipes a little bit downward.
- Use (VW 785/1 B) to secure the rear section of the exhaust system after first lowering it.
Danger of damaging the driveshaft
• To force the driveshaft off of the transfer case and final drive, the pry lever - 1 - must be positioned on the push-on contact - arrow B -.
• The rubber boot will be damaged if the pry lever - 1 - is placed on it. If that happens, then the driveshaft must be replaced.
- Force the driveshaft off of the transfer case. Do this by placing the pry lever - 1 - on the push-on contact - arrow B -.
• While pressing the driveshaft off, the pry lever - 1 - must rest on this surface - A arrow -.
• A locking ring secures the driveshaft to the pin. Give a hefty jerk to press it off.
- Mark the installed position of the driveshaft in reference to the rear final drive - arrow -.
- Use the pry lever - A - to press the driveshaft off of the rear final drive. Do this by placing the pry lever - A - on the push-on connector.
• A locking ring secures the driveshaft to the pin. Give a hefty jerk to press it off.
• You will need a second technician to hold the back end of the driveshaft to avoid bending and damaging it.
- Remove the bolts - 2 through 7 - and remove the tunnel support.
- Remove the bolts - 1, 8 - from the bracket that holds the driveshaft's center support.
- Remove the rear driveshaft.
- Place the rear driveshaft and the bracket for the center support facing upward.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Rear Driveshaft Overview ] Rear Driveshaft Overview
- Replace the O-ring - 1 - and locking ring - 2 - for the rear final drive. Allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog.
- Replace the O-ring - A - and locking ring - B - on the transfer case.
• You will need a second technician to hold the back end of the driveshaft to avoid bending and damaging it.
- Install the driveshaft and hand-tighten the center support - 1 -.
- Place the driveshaft on the rear final drive.
• The markings on the driveshaft and the final drive - arrow - line up with each other.
- Do not tilt the driveshaft as you use a hefty jerk to install it on the pin. Use a suitable tool, for example a wooden mallet - A -, to drive the driveshaft onto the flange if you cannot install it by giving it a hefty yank. Test to make sure the driveshaft is firmly seated by pulling back on it.
- Tighten the bolts - 2 through 7 - for the tunnel support.
• The round hole - arrow - on the tunnel side faces the direction of travel.
- Tighten down the center support - 1, 8 - so that it nothing is placing any tension on it.
- Install the rear exhaust system.
- Install the tail pipes.
- Deactivate the vehicle lift mode using a vehicle with air suspension.
