Tie Rod End






Tie Rod End

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench 50-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)

Ball Joint Puller (T10187)

Removing

There are two different tie rod ends being installed: one marked with "R" and one marked with "L" and an "arrow". They indicate the driving direction. For allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog.

They can be removed and installed with the steering gear in the vehicle.

- With vehicles with air suspension, place vehicle on hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.

- Remove front wheel.

- Loosen lock nut - 2 -. Counter hold at the tie rod hex head - 1 -.






- Loosen nut of tie rod ball joint, but do not remove yet.






- Press the tie rod end off the wheel bearing housing with the (3287 A).

- Remove the nut - 4 -, disengage the tie rod and remove the tie rod end - 3 -.






Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Identification on the tie rod end.

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Steering Gear Overview ] Steering Gear Overview

- Install the tie rod end - 3 - on the tie rod - 1 - as far as the stop on the lock washer - 2 -.






- Align the tie rod end - 3 - so the tie rod ball joint pins are in the installation location.

- Insert tie rod end - 3 - in the wheel bearing housing as far as the stop.

- Tighten the lock nut - 2 - and nut - 4 -.

- Install wheel.

- After installing a new tie rod end, vehicle must be aligned. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.
