Starter
Observe notes on contact corrosion => [ Contact Corrosion ] Contact Corrosion.
Removing
• When installing, reinstall all cable ties that were loosened or cut during removal in the same locations.
- With ignition switched off, disconnect battery Ground (ND) wire. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.
- Drain coolant.
- Remove primary catalytic converter.
- Remove right coolant pipe.
- Remove generator. Refer to => [ Generator ] Generator.
- Remove the oil cooler.
- Remove heat shield from steering gear - arrows -.
- Remove heat shield - arrows -.
- Free up wiring below.
- Disconnect electrical connector - arrow - to Engine Speed Sensor (G28).
- Remove electrical connector from bracket and free up electrical wiring.
- Remove bolts - 2 - and - 3 -.
- Free up wiring harness to starter at wiring harness bracket - 1 - by cutting through cable ties.
- Remove bolt - 1 -.
- Tip starter to side slightly so that engine support cut-out allows access to release terminal 50 connector - item 3 -.
• Release lever is not visible and must be felt with fingers.
- Disconnect electrical connector - 3 - by sliding locking mechanism back - arrow - and pressing release down.
• The B+ line can only be removed after disconnecting terminal 50 electrical connector.
- Remove nut - 2 - and remove B+ wire from solenoid switch.
- Remove starter.
Installing
- Bring starter into installation position.
- Install upper starter screw only 2 turns.
• It must be possible to pivot starter lightly.
- Tighten B+ wire.
- Have a 2nd technician hold terminal 50 electrical connector from front through engine support and back into installation position.
- Position terminal 50 electrical connector on starter.
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
• When installing, install cable ties at same location.
- Install the oil cooler.
- Install generator. Refer to => [ Generator ] Generator.
- Install right coolant pipe.
- Install primary catalytic converter.
- Fill coolant.
- Connect battery. Refer to => [ Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.
