Generator
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hose Clamps Up To 25 Mm (3094)
• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
• Bolt M8x50
Observe notes on contact corrosion => [ Contact Corrosion ] Contact Corrosion.
Removing
- With ignition switched off, disconnect battery Ground (ND) wire. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.
Hot vapor/hot coolant may escape when opening the coolant reservoir. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
- Remove the cap from the coolant reservoir.
- Remove bolts and remove the noise insulation in the front - 1 -.
• Disregard item - 2 -.
Risk of destroying if the running direction of a used ribbed belt is reversed.
• Before removing ribbed belt, marking running direction with chalk or a felt-tip pen for reinstallation.
- Pivot tensioner in - direction of arrow - to release tension on ribbed belt.
- To secure ribbed belt tensioner, install an M8x50 bolt in the threaded hole - A -.
• Only install M8x50 bolt far enough so that ribbed belt can be removed from the tensioner without force, otherwise the tensioner will be damaged.
- Remove ribbed belt.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Remove ribbed belt tensioner.
- Disconnect electrical connector - 1 -.
- Remove B+ line protective cap.
- Remove nut and remove B+ line.
- Remove the bolt - 3 - and clamp off the coolant hoses using hose clamps (3094).
- Place (VAS 6208) under engine.
- Detach coolant hoses at generator.
- Remove the bolts - arrows - and remove generator.
• If generator is stuck in its bracket, screw in mounting bolts again except 2 rotations.
• Carefully strike on bolt heads using flat side of hammer - doing this loosens sleeves of generator mount.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
• Secure all hose connections using standard hose clamps. Refer to Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).
- Slightly drive back sleeves for retaining bolts in order for easier installation of generator.
• Tight sleeves for generator mount must be made smooth-running, otherwise clamping force of sleeve is too little despite correct torque.
- Position ribbed belt over pulleys in stated sequence.
1. Vibration damper
2. Coolant pump
3. Tension roller
4. Generator
5. Idler pulley
6. A/C Compressor
7. Power steering pump
• Replace O-ring
• When installing ribbed belt, be sure that it is seated correctly on belt pulleys.
- Install ribbed belt tensioner and ribbed belt.
- Connect battery. Refer to => [ Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.
- Check coolant level.
- Start engine and check belt routing.
