Glow Plug: Service and Repair
Glow Plugs
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hinged Socket (3220) (for glow plugs "1, 3, 4 and 6")
• Socket Insert AF 12 for Glow Plugs 4-cyl.TDI CR (VAS 6454) (for glow plugs " cylinders 2 and 5")
Removing
- Turn off the ignition.
- Remove engine cover. Refer to => [ Engine Cover ] Service and Repair.
• For cylinders 3 and 6, the intake manifold flap motor must be removed.
• In cylinders 2 and 5, a combustion chamber pressure sensor is integrated in the glow plug.
• Electrical component list term: glow plug 2 (Q11) with cylinder 2 combustion chamber pressure sensor (G678).
• Electrical component list term: glow plug 5 (Q14) with cylinder 5 combustion chamber pressure sensor (G681).
Glow Plug Versions
1 Glow plug with combustion chamber pressure sensor (only installed in cylinders 2 and 5).
2 Glow plug without combustion chamber pressure sensor.
- Disconnect glow plug connectors from glow plugs.
- Clean the glow plug duct in the cylinder head. Contaminants must not enter the cylinder.
• Example for cleaning:
• Extract large contaminants with a vacuum cleaner.
• Spray a brake cleaner or a suitable cleaner into the glow plug shaft, let it work and then use compressed air to remove it.
• Then clean the glow plug duct with a cloth dampened with oil.
- Use the (3220) to loosen the glow plugs "1, 3, 4 and 6".
- To loosen glow plugs "2 and 5" use the (VAS 6454).
- Then carefully remove the glow plug by hand or with a hose without bending it.
Installing
- Carefully install the glow plugs by hand or with a hose without bending it.
- Tighten the glow plugs with (3220) or (VAS 6454) to the tightening specification.
• Glow plug tightening specification: 17 Nm
- Connect the glow plug connector and make sure it is secure.
Further installation is performed in reverse order.
