Selector Lever Cable
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hose Clip Pliers (VAS 6340)
Removing
- Move the selector lever into P.
- Turn off the ignition.
4-Cylinder 2.0L TFSI Vehicles
For this engine there are two different versions.
Version 1, with Side Air Filter Housing
- Disconnect the connector - 1 - on the mass air flow sensor (G70).
- Remove the air guide hose - 2 -.
- Remove the screw - 4 - and the air filter housing.
• Ignore - 3 -.
Version 2, with Air Filter Inside the Engine Cover
- Disconnect the connector - 3 - on the MAF sensor.
- Open the clips - 1 and 2 - and remove the air guide hose from the mass air flow sensor.
- Open the spring clamps - 4 - remove the air intake hose from the engine cover.
Danger of breaking the engine cover.
• Always follow the removal sequence.
- Carefully remove the engine cover from - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 -.
Vehicles with 6-cylinder 3.2L engine
- Remove vacuum hose - 2 - on air duct hose.
- Remove air guide hose - 1 - on the throttle valve control module (J338).
- Disconnect the connector - 3 - on the mass air flow sensor.
- Remove upper section of air filter - arrow -.
- Remove filter insert.
- Remove the lower section of the air filter - arrows -.
All Vehicles
• Selector lever in P.
- Remove the securing clamp - C -.
- Move the securing clamps - A - and remove.
- Press selector lever cable from the transmission shift lever - arrow - and place above.
• Do not bend the selector lever cable.
• Ignore - 1, B, D -.
- Lift the vehicle.
- Remove the front exhaust pipe, the catalytic converters and muffler.
- Remove the driveshaft.
- Loosen clips - arrows - and remove heat shield.
- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the cover.
- Carefully slide the cover and protective sleeve forward over the selector lever cable. Do not damage protective surfaces when doing so.
- Remove the bolts - arrows -.
Risk of destroying the electrical components on the circuit board through static discharge.
• Do not touch the circuit board - B - with your fingers.
• The circuit board can only be replaced together with the selector mechanism function unit.
- Remove locking plate - A - from selector mechanism function unit by unclipping left and right retaining tabs.
• This process is only possible if the selector lever is switched in the position S.
- Remove selector lever cable securing clamp - 1 - downward.
- Pull the plastic securing spring - 2 - forward slightly and press the pins - 3 - up only as far as necessary - arrow -.
• Be sure not to push pins all the way out.
- Remove the selector lever cable - 4 - from selector mechanism function unit.
• Do not bend the selector lever cable.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
• Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Selector Mechanism Overview ] Selector Mechanism Overview.
• Replace the selector lever cable securing clamps.
• Check the protective casing for damage. The protective casing can only be replaced together with the selector lever cable.
• Check to see if the protective casing is seated correctly and is not twisted.
- Guide selector lever cable with protective casing into the cover. Do not damage protective surfaces when doing so.
- Insert the end of selector lever cable - 4 - into selector lever joint.
- Press pin - 3 - downwards - arrow - and check to see if it is locked by the plastic securing spring - 2 -.
- Insert the selector lever cable clip - 1 -.
• Installed position: The angled end of circlip faces toward shift mechanism.
Risk of destroying the electrical components on the circuit board through static discharge.
• Do not touch the circuit board - B - with your fingers.
- Clip in locking plate - A - and tighten screws - arrows -.
- Mount the lower cover with the seal to the selector mechanism hand-tight - arrows -; pay close attention to the position of the seal.
- Insert the selector lever cable protective casing into the cover.
- Carefully press the selector lever cable on the transmission selector lever on the transmission away from the direction of the - arrow -.
- Install lock washer - A - and lock at bottom.
- Install the securing clamps - C -.
- Move the selector lever from S to P.
• Shift mechanism and selector lever cable must have freedom of movement during this, if necessary, replace selector lever cable or service shift mechanism.
- Move the selector lever into P.
- Tighten screws - arrows - for the lower cover.
- Install heat shield and CW coverings for underbody.
- Install the driveshaft.
- Install the exhaust system free of tension.
