Transmission, Removing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Observe the measures to be taken after disconnecting the battery.

- Release battery cover - arrow - and remove.






- With the ignition switched off, disconnect the battery Ground (GND) cable - arrow -.






Vehicles with an Air Filter in the Engine Cover

- Remove the engine cover and air guide channel - arrows -.






Vehicles with an Air Filter Housing in Front of the Battery

- Remove the complete air filter housing.






- Remove the engine cover - arrows -.






Continued for All Vehicles

- Remove battery.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - and remove the battery tray - 1 -.






- Remove the shift cable lock washer - 3 - from the transmission shift lever - 1 - and remove the cable from the pins - arrow -.






Metal Relay Lever - 2 -

- Remove the selector cable lock washer - 4 - from the relay lever - 2 - and remove the cable from the pins - arrow -.

Plastic Relay Lever

To avoid damage to the selector cable, the cable retainer must be disconnected from the selector lever before removal.

- Pull the securing mechanism forward as far as the stop in the direction of - arrow 1 - and then unlock to the left in the direction of - arrow 2 -.






- Press the relay lever forward direction of - arrow 3 -.

- The plastic relay lever is removed together with the cable retainer later in the procedure.

- Remove cable mounting bracket from transmission - arrows - and tie it up off to the side with the cables.






- Remove bolts - 1 - at engine/transmission flange.






- Remove both fan shroud upper bolts - top arrows -.






- Disconnect any hoses and cables in the area of the (10-222A) lifting eyes on the engine.






Position (10-222A) with the bracket (10 - 222 A /1) and the (10 - 222 A /11) on the bolted flanges of fender.

- Pretension the engine slightly using the spindle, but do not lift.

- With the vehicle still standing on its wheels, loosen the left front collar bolt - 2 - a maximum of 90°, otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged.






- Raise vehicle.

Audi A3

- Remove noise insulation in center by loosening fasteners - 1 and 2 -.






Audi A3 Cabriolet

- Remove the center noise insulation - 1 -.






- Remove the noise insulation frame - arrow -.

- Remove left front wheel housing liner fasteners - 1 to 3 -






- Remove air guide hose by lifting retaining clips slightly - arrows -.






- Disconnect electrical connector - 1 -.






- Remove remaining bolts - bottom arrows - and remove fan shroud downward.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 2 - for back-up lamp switch (F4).






- Remove the nut - 1 - and remove the bracket with electrical lines from the threaded stud.

- Lay the bracket with the electrical lines aside.

- Remove lower starter bolt - 1 -.

- Remove bolts - 1 to 3 - and remove pendulum support.






- Remove right drive axle heat shield - arrows -.






- Remove right and left drive axle from flange shaft - A - on transmission.






Ensure drive axle protective coating is not damaged.

- If present, remove small flywheel cover plate - A - - arrows -.






- Remove nuts - arrows -.






- Remove catalytic converter from turbocharger and secure.

To prevent damage, decoupling element of the front exhaust pipe must never be angled by more than 10°.

During the following procedures, make sure that brake fluid does not leak onto the starter or the transmission. If this happens, these areas must be cleaned thoroughly.






- Clamp off supply hose to master cylinder with the Hose Clamps Up to 25 mm Dia. (3094).

- Pull the clamp - arrow - all the way out.






- Remove the hose/line assembly - A - from the bleeder/clutch slave cylinder and seal the openings.


Clutch pedal must no longer be operated.

- Disconnect the Ground (GND) cable - B - from the upper bolt on the starter.

- Then remove the upper bolt - B -.

- Place the starter to the side on the longitudinal member.

- Remove assembly mounting bolts - arrows - on transmission.






- Lower the transmission by adjusting the spindles of the (10 - 222 A) by the dimension - a -.






Dimension - a - = 60 mm.

- Unfasten mount from transmission - arrows -.






Metal Relay Lever - 1 -






- Remove the circlip - arrow - and remove relay lever - 1 -.

Plastic Relay Lever

- Push the tab - arrow 1 - and remove the relay lever and the cable retainer. At the same time move the relay lever in its operating direction.






Disregard - 2 -.

- Remove the Power Steering Control Module (J500) heat shield from the subframe- arrows -, if equipped.






- If it has not been done already, create 2 holes 7 mm in diameter the (T10036) as shown in the illustration.






Dimension - a - = 11 mm.

Dimension - b - = 98 mm.

Dimension - c - = 70 mm.

- Fasten the (T10036) to the subframe with 2 bolts M6x20 - arrows -.






- Fasten the (3300 A) to the (T10036).






- Press engine forward with (3300 A) spindle. Pay particular attention to the following points:






The A/C compressor - 2 - must not touch the refrigerant line - 1 - - arrow -.

The generator must not touch the refrigerant line.

The pressure pipe must not touch the radiator.

- Remove collar bolt - 2 - and remove left drive axle - 1 -.






Do not load the wheel bearings when the drive axle bolt - 2 - is loosened.

- Remove lower connecting bolts for engine/transmission - 4 -.






Loosen the engine/transmission bolts - 3 - and leave them screwed in hand-tight.

(3282) is equipped with (3282/33) to remove transmission "02Q".

- Place (3282) in (V.A.G 1383A).

- Align arms of Transmission Support according to holes in Adjustment Plate.

- Screw Support Elements - A - onto Adjustment Plate as shown.






- Install (3282/29) in place of Attachment - C -

- Place Engine and Transmission Holder under vehicle, with arrow symbol - B - on Adjustment Plate pointing to front of vehicle.

- Align Adjustment Plate and transmission parallel to one another.

- Secure (VW 771/40) in threaded hole of transmission housing as depicted in the illustration.






- Screw (3282/29) into hole for mounting bolt of pendulum support on transmission.

- Secure transmission on (3282) using bolt (M10x20) - A -.

When doing this, drift - B - should stop at bottom flush with guide of (3282) - arrow -.

- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolt - C -.

- Remove the last engine/transmission connecting bolt - arrow -.






- Press transmission off engine (centering sleeves).

- Pivot transmission forward in direction of - arrow - via the (3282) spindle.






- Tilt the transmission toward the left via the spindles of the (3282).

- Guide transmission past the control arm bracket, push it forward slightly and then carefully lower it.
