Battery Switch-Off Relay and Battery Interrupt Igniter

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B)

Identification: Battery Switch-Off Relay -J655 and Battery Interrupt Igniters -N253.

Battery Interrupt Igniters (N253) are pyrotechnic components.

Follow the safety precautions for pyrotechnic components.

Follow the disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal.

Battery Switch-Off Relay (J655) disconnects the circuit electrically. The Battery Switch-Off Relay (J655) must always be replaced after a deployment.

If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (K75) comes on after a vehicle accident, check whether crash data is stored using. If this is the case, check whether the malfunction 001 Resistance too large is saved in Battery Interrupt Igniter (N253) DTC memory. If this is the case, Battery Interrupt Igniter (N253) must be replaced.

Removal:

- Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.

- Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition off.

- Remove right side luggage compartment side trim. Refer to => [ Luggage Compartment Side Trim ] Luggage Compartment Side Trim

- Remove foam insert in right rear of luggage compartment

- Remove foam insert in right front of luggage compartment

- Open quick-release fasteners - 1 - and remove cover - 2 -.

From MY 05:

Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Loosen electrical connector lock and remove connector - 6 -.

- Remove nuts - 5 - and remove Battery Interrupt Igniter (N253) - 8 -.

Installing

Follow the safety precautions for pyrotechnic components.

Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following.

- Maintain the specified tightening specifications.

- When connecting electrical connector, ensure it engages securely and locking mechanism is OK.

Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

- Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition switched on.

If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again.
