Side Airbag
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095)
• Fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136)
• Follow the safety precautions for pyrotechnic components.
• Follow the disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal.
• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

• Only the old side airbag modules have a connector directly on the airbag module. The new side airbag modules do not have a connector in this location. They are equipped with a continuous wiring harness. Refer to => [ Side Airbag Cable Guide, New Version ] Side Airbag Cable Guide, New Version.
• Three different connector versions are possible for the connector opposite the side airbag wiring harness: under the seat pan, in the backrest (not pictured) and as a continuous version. Refer to => [ Replacement Airbag Wiring Harness ] Replacement Airbag Wiring Harness

Removing
- Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition off.
- Remove front seat:
• Manual seat, refer to => [ Front Manual Seat ] Front Manual Seat
• Power seat, refer to => [ Power Seat ] Power Seat
- Mount the (VAS 6136) on the (VAS 6095).
- Attach the front seat to the (VAS 6136).
- Remove backrest cover panel.
- Pry off lower fastening strips - 10 - (quantity: 3) with a screwdriver.
- Pry off side retainer strips - 2 - with a screwdriver and fold cover forward.
- If equipped side airbag connector - 3 -=> [ (Item 3) Side Airbag Connector ] press the latch - 1 - upward, and disconnect the electrical connector for the side airbag - 3 -. If not equipped, remove the side airbag including the wiring harness.
- Remove the screw - 8 -.
- Drill out rivet - 6 -.
- Push side airbag - 5 - up and remove it.
Installation
- Engage side airbag - 5 - in backrest frame - 7 -.
- Press side airbag - 5 - downward until it stops.
- Lay ground cable eye - 4 - between backrest frame - 7 - and side airbag - 5 -.
- Secure ground cable - 4 - with a rivet.
- Replace screw - 8 -.
- Bolt side airbag - 5 - on with bolt - 8 -.
- Ensure airbag cable - 12 - runs through cable guide - 13 - and is secured with clip - 11 - on backrest frame - 7 -.
- Install side airbag - 5 - in reverse order of removal.
Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition switched on.
• If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again.
