Driver Airbag

Removing


Follow the safety precautions for pyrotechnic components.

Follow the disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal.

- Position the steering wheel so that it is as far rearward and up as possible, using the full adjustment range of the steering column adjuster.

- Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition off.

- Remove cover cap - 1 - left and right from backside of steering wheel - arrow -.





- Turn steering wheel out of center position about 80° right.





The airbag unit securing screw - 3 - must be opposite the cut-out in bottom of steering column trim - 1 -.

- Remove the bolt - 2 -.

- Turn steering approx. 160° left and remove left airbag unit screw.

- Bring steering wheel to center position (wheels straight).


Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Pull driver's airbag unit from steering wheel a bit.

- Push connector lock - 3 - to stop - arrow -; this disconnects electrical connection - 2 - and it can be removed.





- Remove airbag unit - 4 - from steering wheel.

- If applicable, disconnect electrical connection - 1 -.


Set the airbag down so the padding faces upward.

Installing


Follow the safety precautions for pyrotechnic components.

Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:

Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.

Ensure wires are not pinched.

- Connection spiral spring connector with airbag unit coupling on coil connector with slip ring.

- Position airbag unit - 3 - in steering wheel.





- Turn steering wheel out of center position about 80° right.

Airbag unit securing screw must be opposite cut-out in steering column trim - 1 -.

- Install right airbag unit securing screw - 2 - about 2 turns.

- Turn steering wheel about 160° left.

- Install left airbag unit securing screw about 2 turns.

- Press horn about 3 times to achieve even gap dimension.

- Do not touch airbag unit anymore.

- Tighten screws.

- Press cover cap into cut-out on steering wheel.


Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

- Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition switched on.

If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again.
