Driver or Front Passenger Head Curtain Airbag with Igniter (N251)/(N252), From 06.10

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Release Tool (VAS 1978/17) from the Release Tool For Cigarette Lighter Set (VAS 1978/35).

Removing


Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components.

Follow all regulations when disposing of pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal.

- Switch the ignition on.

- Disconnect the battery ground cable with the ignition switched on.

- Remove headliner. Refer to => [ Headliner ] Headliner.

- Remove head curtain airbag bolt - 3 - on the A-pillar.






- Remove the head-level airbag from the clips - 1 - and - 2 -.









Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must discharge static electricity. For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 1 -.

- To do this, release the connector lock - 3 - using a small screwdriver - 1 - and remove the electrical connector - 3 - from the head curtain airbag.






- Remove cap nuts - 2 - and - 3 -.






- Detach the clip - 6 - and the retaining strap clips - 5 through 1 - for the head curtain airbag from the vehicle body. Use the "spoon" (VAS 1978/17) to forcefully push the clips - 5 through 1 - into the opening - A - until they hit the stop, as shown in the illustration. Pull the left side of the clip out from the body. Pull the (VAS 1978/17) back out, making sure that the clip on the side that has been released does not snap back into place. Rotate the (VAS 1978/17) 180° and then repeat the process for the opening - B -.






- Remove head curtain airbag from vehicle.

Installation


Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components.

Always follow side curtain airbag installation procedure.

Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:


Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must discharge static electricity. For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Clip the side curtain airbag retaining tab clips - 1 through 5 - onto the body.






- Clip the clips - 6 - onto the body.

- Engage the head-level airbag - 4 - on the bolt and tighten the cap nuts - 2 - and - 3 - by hand.






- Tighten cap nuts - 2 - and - 3 -.

- Connect the electrical connector - 1 -.

- Connect the connector - 1 - on the side curtain airbag igniter - 2 -.






- Press in the plug connector - 3 - in the - direction of the arrow -. This slides the connector into the side curtain airbag as far as the stop and locks it.

Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.

Make sure the wires do not get caught.

Replace the clips - 1 - and - 2 - if the removal is due to a crash.






- Secure the side curtain airbag with the clips - 1 - and - 2 -.

- Attach the tensioning strap and use the bolt - 3 - to tighten it to the A-pillar.

- Check whether the "black line" - 8 - is visible the entire length. By making sure it is will ensure that the head curtain airbag is NOT twisted.






- Install the headliner. Refer to => [ Headliner ] Headliner.


Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on.

If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again using the Vehicle diagnostic tester.
