Airbag, Servicing







Coil Connector with Slip Ring

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Drill 2.5 mm dia. length at least 75 mm

Removing

- Pull steering wheel with adjuster all the way out and adjust downward.

- Remove steering wheel.

Four-spoke steering wheel through 05.04, refer to => [ 4-Spoke Steering Wheel ] 4-Spoke Steering Wheel.

Three-spoke steering wheel through 05.04, refer to => [ 3-Spoke Steering Wheel ] 3-Spoke Steering Wheel.

Four-spoke steering wheel from 06.04, refer to => [ Steering Wheel ] Steering Wheel.

Three-spoke steering wheel from 06.04, refer to => [ Steering Wheel ] Steering Wheel.


The spiral spring/return spring with slip ring must not be rotated out of center position (secure in installation position with adhesive tape).

- Remove gap cover - 1 - in - direction of arrow -.





- Remove upper part of steering column trim upward from lower part - arrows -.





- Remove gap cover and disengage upper part of steering column trim from lower part.

- Remove the bolts - 4 - and remove steering column adjustment handle - 3 -.





- Remove the screws - 1 -, - 2 - and - 5 -.

- Remove lower part of steering column trim.

- Remove the bolt - 1 -.





- Slide a 2.5 mm diameter drill - item 2 - approximately 45 mm into hole - arrow 1 - on Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527) until retaining detent is released - arrow 2 -.

- Pull Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527) down slightly and remove drill.

- Release clips - arrow - on connector side of Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527) and remove control module from steering column switch module.





- Carefully release catches - arrows - and remove return spring with slip ring - 1 - from steering column switch module (SMLS).





Installation

Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:

Return spring with slip ring is secured as a new part in center position with a cable tie or shear ring.

- Ensure all catches and connections engage cleanly.

- Then hook front of upper part of steering column trim into lower part - arrow 1 -.





- Make sure the pin in the rear lower steering column trim piece fits into the opening on the upper steering column trim piece - arrow 2 -.

- Engage gap cover on instrument cluster.
