Selector Mechanism, Checking

Overview:

1. Selector mechanism function test

2. Checking ignition key removal lock

3. Locking button on selector lever handle, checking

1. Selector mechanism function test

In selector lever positions "S", "D", "R" and "Tiptronic gate" the starter motor will not operate.

If selector lever position "N" is selected at speeds greater than 5 km/h, the selector lever lock solenoid must not engage and block the selector lever. Selector lever can be shifted into driving gear.

For speeds below 2 km/h (almost standstill) and shifting into selector lever position "N", the shift lock solenoid must only engage after approximately 1 second. Selector lever can only be shifted out of position "N" with the brake pedal operated.

Selector lever in the "P" position:

- Press the button the parking brake to lock the electro-mechanical brake.

- Do not operate brake pedal.

- To reach the "ignition on" position, press the key briefly in the ignition lock.

- Do not operate brake pedal.

Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of position "P" while locking button on selector lever handle is pressed. Shift Lock Solenoid (N110) blocks selector lever.

- Press brake pedal and hold.

Shift Lock Solenoid (N110) releases selector lever. Selecting a driving mode is possible. With locking button on selector lever handle pressed, slowly shift selector lever from "P" through "R, N, D, S"; when doing so, check whether Transmission Range (TR) Display (Y6) in instrument cluster corresponds with selector lever position.

Selector lever in "N" position and ignition switched on:

- Do not operate brake pedal.

After a brief pause: Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of "N" position despite pressing locking button on selector lever handle. Shift Lock Solenoid (N110) blocks selector lever.

- Operate brake pedal.

Shift Lock Solenoid (N110) releases selector lever. Selection of position "D" is possible.

Selector lever in position "D", ignition switched on:

- Shift selector lever into "Tiptronic gate".

Lit "D" symbol in Selector Lever Transmission Range (TR) Position Display (Y26) must go out and "+" and "-" symbols must light up.

The Transmission Range Display (Y6) in the instrument cluster should switch from "D" to "M1" when the selector lever is shifted into the "Tiptronic gate".

- Perform "Guided Fault Finding" if the specified values are not reached .

- Adjust selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] .

- Locking button on selector lever handle, checking.

- Check ignition key removal lock.

2. Check ignition key withdrawal lock

- Press the button the parking brake to lock the electro-mechanical brake.

- Do not operate brake pedal.

- To reach the "ignition on" position, press the key briefly in the ignition lock.

- Press brake pedal and hold.

It must be possible to shift selector lever out of position "P" without "hitching" while locking button on selector lever handle is pressed.

- Switch ignition off.

It should not be possible to remove the ignition key when the selector lever is in any other position than "P".

- Place selector lever in position "P".

- Pull out ignition key.

It must be possible to remove ignition key only in position "P".

Selector lever cannot be shifted out of "P" position with button pressed and brake pedal depressed.

Perform "Guided Fault Finding" if the ignition key withdrawal lock does not function as described.

3. Check locking button on selector lever handle

Check locking button for ease of movement:

It must be possible to press the locking button without using great force.

After releasing, the locking button must come all the way back out by itself.

- Check the selector lever handle for correct installation if the specified values are not reached. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.

- Make sure the selector lever is not bent.

Function test:

The ignition is switched on.

The locking button on the selector lever handle must be pressed for the following shifts. If it is not pressed, the selector lever cannot be shifted into the specified position.

"P" to "R" and also press brake pedal

"D" to "S"

"N" to "R"; in standstill, also press brake pedal after long wait

"R" to "P"

- Check the selector lever handle for correct installation if the specified values are not reached. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.
