Removal and Replacement






ATF Pipes and Cooler

Cooler Overview





1 Radiator
2 Clamps
3 Air Conditioning (A/C) condenser
4 Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) cooler
5 Power steering cooler
6 Lock carrier

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)

Engine Bung Set (VAS 6122)

Protective Eyewear

Removing





- Remove the front noise insulation - 1 -.

- Remove the front bumper.

- Bring the lock carrier into the service position. Radiator Support

- Place the (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.





Wear protective eyewear.

- Remove the bolt - 1 - and the ATF pipes from the temperature valve - 2 -.

- Remove the ATF pipes from/to ATF cooler on the temperature valve - 2 -. Counter-hold at the valve.

- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the (VAS 6122).

- Remove the ATF cooler.





- Remove the ATF pipes from the ATF cooler. Counter-hold at the ATF cooler.

- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the (VAS 6122).

- Remove the bolts from the ATF pipe bracket on the engine and transmission.





- Remove the bolt - arrow - and pull the ATF pipes off the transmission.





- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the (VAS 6122).

Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

Tightening specifications, refer to one of the following:

With a 3.0L engine, refer to => [ ATF Pipes Overview ] Description and Operation.

With a 4.2L engine, refer to => [ ATF Pipes Overview ] Description and Operation.

Install the ATF pipes for the ATF cooler. Refer to => [ ATF Pipe with Union Nut, Retrofitting ] Procedures.

- Replace the O-rings and lubricate with ATF.





- Remove the plug and insert the ATF pipes all the way into the transmission.

- Tighten the bolt - arrow -.

- Tighten the bolts for the ATF pipe bracket on the engine and transmission.





- Install the ATF cooler.

- Remove the plugs, insert ATF pipes all the way into the temperature valve - 2 - and then tighten the bolt - 1 -.





- Check the ATF level. Refer to => [ ATF Level, Checking and Filling ] ATF Level, Checking and Filling.

- Check the ATF pipe connections for leaks while checking the ATF level.

- Install the pronged ring - 1 - around the upper ATF pipe - 3 - just behind the temperature valve - 2 -.





- Slide the pronged ring - 1 - on the ATF toward the ATF cooler until it reaches the illustrated position.

The upper ATF pipe - 3 - has a pronged ring - 1 - to protect it from touching the longitudinal member - 4 -.

If the pronged ring is not there and the ATF pipe is damaged, then the ATF pipe must be replaced.

- Install the lock carrier.

- Install the front bumper.

- Install the noise insulation.
