Condition
^ MIL on.
^ Engine difficult to start. Sometimes rattle in engine compartment.
^ DTC P001600 (bank 1, camshaft position G40 /crankshaft position sensor G28, wrong assignment) stored in engine control unit.
^ Possible damage to camshaft or camshaft bearing surfaces.
Technical Background

Particles of the screen can also reach the camshafts and damage the bearing surfaces.
Production Solution
Optimized oil check valve in camshaft positioner bridge as of calendar week 23/2009.
Service
Check for damage
1. Check the non-return valve in the bearing bridge for wear.
2. Check the chain tensioner.
3. Check camshaft surfaces for damage.
Procedure
^ If the screen and check valve are not damaged:
a. Replace the camshaft and bridge.
b. Erase the DTC.
^ If the screen or check valve are damaged:
a. Inspect bearing surfaces of camshafts for scoring marks.
b. Replace any camshaft or cylinder head that has camshaft bearing damage.
