Selector Shaft, with Transmission Installed

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A)

• Tube (VW 423)

• Torque wrench (VAG 1331)

• Assembly sleeve (01E 311 120)

• Locking fluid (AMV 185 101 A1)

Removing





- On vehicles equipped with auxiliary heater, remove bolts - arrows - securing exhaust pipe of auxiliary heater to sound insulation.

- Loosen bolts/quick release fasteners - 1 - and - 2 - and remove front sound insulation - A -.





- If installed, loosen quick release fasteners - 3 - and remove rear sound insulation - B -.

- Remove heat shield - arrow - for drive axle (right side) and, if installed, also for drive axle (left-side).





- Remove front exhaust pipe (right side).

- Remove connecting rod - 2 - for selector rod.





• - Item 1 - can be disregarded.

- Remove nut - arrow - and detach selector shaft lever from selector shaft.





- Disconnect electrical connector - arrow - for back up lamp switch (F4).





- Remove bolts - arrows - and selector shaft cover - A -.





- Remove two locking bolts - 1 - for selector shaft.





• Make sure that no gear has been engaged.

- Push selector shaft - 2 - into transmission as far as it will go, simultaneously removing pin - 3 -.

- Pull out selector shaft.

- Carefully pry out seal with a screwdriver.





Installing





• replace seals and O-rings.

- Install selector shaft.

• Installation position: Chamfer of selector shaft - B - points downwards.

• Ignore - item A - and - item C -.

- Push selector shaft - 2 - into transmission as far as it will go, simultaneously inserting pin - 3 -.





• Installation position: groove - arrow - on pin - 3 - faces toward selector shaft cover.

- Clean threads of locking bolts - 1 - with a wire brush. Then insert bolts with locking fluid (AMV 185 101 A1 ) and tighten to 45 Nm.

- Install cover - A - with new O-ring.





- Clean threads of bolts - arrows - with a wire brush. Then insert bolts with locking fluid (AMV 185 101 A1 ) and tighten to 24 Nm.

• Use mounting sleeve (01E 311 120) - item A - to prevent damaging the seal - C - when installing.





- Lightly oil outer circumference of seal - arrow -.





- Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip half-full with sealing grease (G 052 128 A1).

- Drive oil seal - arrow - into housing as far as it will go.

- Install front exhaust pipe align exhaust system.





- Install heat shield - arrow - for drive axle (right side) and, if installed, also for drive axle (left-side).
