Passive Occupant Detection System (PODS) (USA Only), Removing And Installing
CAUTION: Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
CAUTION:
The replacement part (service kit) for the Passive Occupant Detection System (PODS) (USA only) is already precalibrated and must not be separated under any circumstances. The service kit consists of:
- Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module J706
- Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor G452
- Seat Occupied Recognition Mat
- Seat cushion
- Wiring harness between Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module J706 and Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor G452.
NOTE: The Passive Occupant Detection System (PODS) (USA only) is only equipped on the front passenger seat.
Removing
- Disconnect battery ground wire.
- Remove passenger seat:
- Mechanically adjustable front seat, removing and installing
- Electric front seat, removing and installing.
- Attach front seat to Fixture For Seat Repair VAS 6136.
- Remove backrest:
- Mechanically adjustable front backrest, removing and installing
- Electric front backrest, removing and installing.
Service kit, removing
- Disconnect connector - 6 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 - (Qty.2)
- Remove cover with upholstery from seat pan.
- Open the guide clip - 8 -.
CAUTION: Connectors - 3 - and - 7 - must not be separated.
- Slide Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor G452 - 4 - sideways from retaining clip - 9 -.
- Fold the cushion - 5 - upward.
NOTE:
- The cushion is included as part of the service kit.
- Clip - 4 - must not be separated.
- The hard foam insert in the crease is not included in the service kit.
- Remove clips - 2 - and - 3 - (Qty.2).
- Carefully pull seat occupied recognition mat - 1 - with upholstery - 5 - upward while guiding Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor G452 and Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module J706 through seat pan without disconnecting connectors.
CAUTION: The pressure hose and the Seat Occupied Recognition Mat - 1 - must not be kinked under any circumstances during repairs.
- Remove the complete service kit.
Installing
CAUTION:
- Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
- Before handling airbag units (e.g. disconnecting electrical connector), the person handling it must "electrostatically discharge". This can be done by touching door striker, for example.
Service kit, installing
NOTE: The hard foam insert in the crease is not included in the service kit. Therefore, reuse the hard foam insert again in the seat crease.
- Guide Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor G452 and Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module J706 from above through seat pan without disconnecting connectors.
CAUTION: The pressure hose and the Seat Occupied Recognition Mat - 1 - must not be kinked under any circumstances during repairs.
- Pull the crease between seat pan and Seat Occupied Recognition Mat - 1 - so that it is smooth (free of folds).
- Secure the Seat Occupied Recognition Mat - 1 - with the clips - 2 - and - 3 - (Qty.2).
- Secure Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor G452 - 4 -.
- Tighten Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module J706 with bolts - 2 - (Qty.2).
- Connect connector - 6 -.
- Install cover with upholstery on seat pan.
Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
NOTE: Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.
- Switch on ignition.
CAUTION: Ignition must be on when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. There must not be anyone inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Connect battery ground wire with ignition switched on.
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051B.
- When installing a new service kit, the following program should be run under "Airbag" in guided fault finding after installing the passengers seat:
