Affected Vehicles

66 Wind/whistling noises in driver-side window

Condition

Wind noises in the driver-side window area or high whistling noise at high speeds.

Technical Background

When driving, the roof trim strip lifts in the A-pillar area, allowing air flow between the seal of the trim strip and the body.

Production Solution

Modified roof trim strip.

Service

Figure 1:

1. Apply a piece of adhesive tape as shown in the illustration such that the lip of the seal can no longer move. Test drive.

Figure 2:

2. If the noise has been eliminated, apply three 85 mm sections of damping strip 8E0 831 575A into the roof molding channel.

The roof molding channel is mounted to the roof line with a series of rivets. Beginning with the forward most rivet and counting toward the rear of the vehicle, apply a section of damping strip between rivet numbers 2 and 3, 3 and 4, and 4 and 5. Installation may be aided using a soapy water solution.

Figure 3:

3. The sections of damping strips can be more easily inserted behind the lip seal and into the channel.
