Left Flange Shaft Seal

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Drift (VW 295)

• Driver (2062)

• Puller (T10037)

• Drip Tray (V.A.G 1306)

• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)

• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)

• Sealing Grease (G 052 128 A1)

Removing

• Transmission is installed.

Observe general repair notes. Refer to => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.

- Remove left front wheel.

- Loosen screws or quick-release connectors - 1 - and - 2 - and remove front noise insulation - A -.





- If equipped, loosen quick-release connectors - 3 - and remove rear noise insulation - B -.

- If equipped, remove noise insulation - arrows - in the left wheel housing.





- If equipped, remove left driveshaft heat shield - arrows -.





- Remove the drive axle - 1 - from flange shaft and tie as far forward as possible, do not damage surface coating when doing so.

- Place Drip Tray (V.A.G 1306) underneath.





- Remove left flange shaft by fastening Puller ( T10037) to differential cover - arrow -.

- Pry out flange shaft sealing ring.





Installing

- Lightly oil new seal on outer circumference.

- Drive in new flange shaft sealing ring with Drift (2062) without tilting seal.





• Drive-in depth: 5.50 ± 0.15 mm under surface of cover.

- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with Sealing Grease (G 052 128 A1).

• Check if there is any visible damage to the polygon bearings - 2 -.





• If the polygon bearings - 2 - do not run smoothly with the flange shaft removed, this does indicate that the bearings are faulty. A test for noisy bearings can only be performed with the bearings installed.

• The polygon bearings can only be replaced together with the flange shaft.

• Always replace the flange shaft circlip - 5 -.

- Clamp flange shaft in vise, using jaw protectors. Press previous circlip out of flange shaft grooved with new circlip - A -.





- Drive in flange shaft using Centering Mandrel ( VW 295).

- Driveshaft, installing on flange shaft. Refer to =>

- Install the left drive axle heat shield, if applicable.

- Check gear oil level in manual transmission and fill. Refer to => [ Manual Transmission, Checking Gear Oil Level ] 02XA Transmission.

- Install noise insulation.
